How to Use Castor Oil Packs to Boost Fertility Naturally

A bottle of castor oil set out before making a castor oil pack to improve fertility

Castor oil has been used for centuries in traditional medicine for its healing properties. From ancient Egyptian remedies to Traditional East Asian Medicine (TEAM) and Ayurveda, castor oil has been valued for its ability to improve digestion, detoxification, circulation, and reproductive health. While today, castor oil packs remain primarily in the realm of crunchy selfcare, there is both historical evidence and modern research that supports the ability of castor oil  to improve fertility, support the menstrual cycle, and improve overall reproductive wellness.

What Is Castor Oil and How Does It Work?

Castor oil comes from the seeds of the castor bean plant (Ricinus communis), a plant which commonly grows as a weed along road sides and in undeveloped lots, at least here in southern California. When applied topically, it has a unique ability to penetrate deep into the skin, stimulating smooth muscle contraction which increases circulation and promotes lymphatic drainage. By exerting its effects on the lymphatic and circulatory systems, castor oil can effectively reduce inflammation, break up stagnation of blood, phlegm, and fluids, and promote detoxification via the liver—all of which are essential for optimal fertility.

Traditional Uses of Castor Oil

  • Ancient Egyptian Medicine: The Ebers Papyrus, dating back to before 1500 BCE, mentions castor oil for various uses including stimulating uterine contractions, increasing motility in the gastrointestinal tract, the treatment of abcesses, increasing hair growth, and the treatment of urinary diseases.

  • Ayurveda: Castor oil has been valued for its ability to cleanse the body via increased GI motility and reduce excess heat or toxic conditions associated with inflammation in the skin, joints, and respiratory system.

  • Traditional East Asian Medicine (TEAM): Castor oil is used to invigorate blood circulation, reduce stagnation, and support the liver and digestive system.

  • Ancient Greece and Rome: The ancient western physicians, as far back as Hippocrates, the father of western medicine, circa 400 BCE prescribed castor oil for various purposes as well. It was used as a laxative and detoxifying agent, as expectorant, diuretic, emetic, and anti-inflammatory, and for joint problems, uterine issues, ear conditions, and skin treatments.

  • Midwifery and Women’s Health: Traditionally used to support menstrual health, ease painful periods, and prepare the body for conception.

How Castor Oil Packs Support Fertility

1. Improves Circulation and Detoxification

A sluggish circulatory system can lead to stagnation in the reproductive organs. Castor oil packs enhance blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, helping to nourish the tissues and clear out old, stagnant blood.

2. Supports Liver Function and Hormonal Balance

The liver plays a crucial role in processing and eliminating excess hormones, including estrogen. Castor oil packs can gently support liver detoxification, helping to balance hormones and regulate the menstrual cycle.

3. Reduces Inflammation and Supports a Healthy Uterus

Conditions such as endometriosis, PCOS, and fibroids are often associated with inflammation and congestion in the pelvic area. Castor oil packs may help by reducing inflammation and improving circulation to these areas.

4. Enhances Lymphatic Drainage

The lymphatic system is responsible for clearing waste and toxins from the body. When the lymph becomes stagnant, toxins accumulate, potentially impacting fertility. Castor oil packs promote lymphatic flow, helping to remove metabolic waste and improve overall reproductive health.

How to Use Castor Oil Packs for Fertility

What You’ll Need:

  • Cold-pressed, hexane-free castor oil (I Like this one because it comes in a glass bottle)

  • A clean flannel or cotton cloth (Like this)

  • A piece of plastic wrap, an old towel, or I castor oil pack wrap like this one.

  • A heating pad,  hot water bottle, or reusable hot packs like these.

How to Apply:

  1. Prepare the Cloth: Fold the flannel or cotton cloth to a size that will cover your lower abdomen. Saturate it with castor oil (it should be moist but not dripping).

  2. Place on Your Abdomen or Over Your Liver: Lay the cloth over your lower belly to target your reproductive organs and intestines, covering the area between your pubic bone and navel or the area over your right side ribcage to target your liver

  3. Cover and Apply Heat: Place plastic wrap, an old towel, or your wrap over the pack to prevent staining. Apply your heat source.

  4. Relax for 30-60 Minutes: Rest in a comfortable position while allowing the castor oil to penetrate.

  5. Remove and Clean Up: Wipe off any excess oil with a warm washcloth. Store the cloth in a glass container for reuse (you can use it for several applications before replacing it).

When to Use Castor Oil Packs

  • For Preconception: Use 3-4 times per week, but avoid during menstruation and after ovulation if trying to conceive.

  • For Menstrual Health: Use from the end of your period until ovulation to support circulation and reduce pelvic congestion.

  • For Detoxification: Use as part of a gentle cleanse or during the follicular phase to help balance hormones.

Who Should Avoid Castor Oil Packs?

  • During pregnancy or if you suspect you may be pregnant.

  • During menstruation if you have very heavy bleeding.

  • If you have an IUD (consult your practitioner first).

  • If you have an active infection, open wounds, or recent surgery in the area.

Final Thoughts

Castor oil packs are a simple yet powerful tool for supporting reproductive health, hormonal balance, and overall well-being. When used consistently, they can help improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and create a healthier environment for conception. While they are not a magic cure, they work beautifully in combination with other holistic fertility practices, such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, and a nutrient-rich diet.
